Trade Ideas: MET, CCH, PG, POH vs RIMM, DVD

Huge gains for the market couldn't hide what was a weak level of buying. During strong markets my Trade Ideas scan would hop along all afternoon. Today's buying was almost as 'bad' as yesterday (things picked up yesterday afternoon - but before that it was looking bleak) and had more in common with the fearful selling from earlier this week; the "Top-8" pick list required 1 hour and 34 minutes with only two picks making the "20-appearance" cut - if ever there was an example for short covering - today was the day. A real roller-coaster day; bears overstretched themselves and bulls couldn't resist the value. The Trade Ideas scan was raging into the last hour or so of trading with a "Top-8" selection in 2 minutes but a "20-appearance list" which comprised of only six stocks for the day. Collective2: CSCO out

After Tuesday's sell off I tightened stops on the two remaining positions. One of those stops was hit today. Cisco ( CSCO ) was exited for a +$300 ( +3.46% ) profit on a 300 share position. The breakout gap may yet hold as support, but my concern was triggered by the relative ease at which $31 support was lost. Collective2

Yesterday's weak close spread into today's action. New closing lows for some of the indices was combined with another hard hit day for the Trade Ideas scan. The "Top-8" list covered a time span of 1 hour 53 minutes , with no stock making the "20-appearance" list. A relatively uneventful day for the markets. The Trade Ideas scan was very sluggish with a "Top-8" list covering a disappointing 1 hour 40 minutes and a "20-appearance" list done in just over 4 hours . Not looking like a bottom is here yet. Stockcharts.com Weekly review

Image
It has been a while since I last took a review of the Stockchart Public Lists - but here is the latest. In terms of ranking, Richard Crockett's excellent stock pick list leads the pack. It will be interesting to see if his list still leads next month after the declines in the market. Below is an example of one of his stock recommendations which has weathered the market declines well: Dr. Joe starts with his weekly summary: His Full Stochastics chart has marked good bottoms - there still looks to be some way to go here before the next bottom is in place: Money flow is struggling which suggests 13,200 might not be the support it could otherwise be: The S&P Percent of stocks above the 50-day MA has also completed a bottom. The question is whether the next rally can take out 1,550: Ted Burge shared some interesting insights for the Dow point-n-figure chart: August 10th! The ATR at the close yesterday was 19.84 per minute. August 9th! The Average True Range this morning is 14.57
