Happy Christmas!

I will be posting light until January 4th. Hopefully the market won't go too crazy in the meantime. Fingers crossed for those looking to travel home for the holidays - it's a bit of a mess out there...

Daily Market Commentary: More Minor Gains

Image
There was very little to add to comments of the past few days. The S&P edged higher in what I have drawn as a new, wider upward channel. The angle of this channel suggests the rally will easily last into the start of 2011. ($SPX) via StockCharts.com The Russell 2000 scored a minor victory by reversing an early 'sell' trigger in the CCI. Although the index struggled to hold early day gains, it trades well inside its rising channel. ($RUT) via StockCharts.com Of these new rising channels the Nasdaq 100 is riding closest to support - watch for leads. ($NDX) via StockCharts.com As for Tuesday, it looks like it will be more of the same - small gains but likely little opportunity for anything more than scalped returns. Stock Breakouts: Five-in-Five - EK, MKSI, OZRK, QSII, VVTV

With the holiday season fast approaching there was no shortage of late volume activity on Friday. Fifty-one breakouts made the screen, best of these were EK, MKSI, OZRK, QSII and VVTV. Perhaps some opportunity for Q1 if bulls can continue the current momentum in broader markets. Weekly Market Commentary: Rally On

Image
Another week of gains kept the rally ticking over and upwards. The Nasdaq is on course to test 2,818 resistance with volume rising to mark an accumulation week - the second over the past three weeks. Nasdaq via StockCharts.com The Nasdaq 100 managed to go one step better and finished the week at new multi-year highs. This index has done all the leg work for the past few months and is a good leading indicator as to what other indices may do in the weeks ahead. ($NDX) via StockCharts.com However, the Percentage of Nasdaq Stocks above the 50-day MA is still playing to a bull trap (and therefore is bearish for the Nasdaq) ($NAA50R) via StockCharts.com While the Nasdaq Summation Index is playing to a broadening wedge with another resistance test in the making; Nasdaq breadth favours a reversal. ($NASI) via StockCharts.com The Russell 2000 managed to clear 760 resistance last week and is holding the breakout. ($RUT) via StockCharts.com Even the S&P looks to have manag

Daily Market Commentary: Bulls Undo Bears Work

Image
The one days worth of selling generated by bears was today negated by the buying action of bulls. Volume was comparable to that of yesterday, fitting a case of tit-for-tat between the two sides. The gains have put new yearly highs on the radar and with supporting technicals net bullish for all leading indices, there is little to suggest they won't make it there. The S&P was able to close above yesterday's open and is just under 4 points away from a new high. ($SPX) via StockCharts.com The Nasdaq rallied before it got anywhere close to testing either 2,579 support or its 20-day MA. Ordinarily, this would be bullish - but the lack of volume is a concern, especially when volume is compared to that from September through November. ($COMPQ) via StockCharts.com Nasdaq breadth was a little mixed. The Percentage of Nasdaq Stocks Above the 50-day MA saw increased bearish technical weakness but the indicator found support at the November double bottom neckline. ($NAA50R)

Daily Market Commentary: Bears Pop In

Image
After a quiet two days the market took a probable first step in the direction of its next move; this step been down. The S&P posted a small loss and will look to the 1,227 reaction high and then its 20-day MA for support. ($SPX) via StockCharts.com The Nasdaq made another run at the 2,646 high, but it eased to the lows of the day by the close. ($COMPQ) via StockCharts.com The semiconductor index continued its move towards its 20-day MA and lower channel support. ($SOX) via StockCharts.com It was a similar story for the Russell 2000, closing with a shooting star, although its current high is more isolated from nearby support. ($RUT) via StockCharts.com Based on today's action there is probably enough weakness from the close to see some follow through lower tomorrow. Selling volume is unlikely to be high, so view this as part of a low key pullback. Follow Me on Twitter Build a Trading Strategy Business in Zignals Subscribe to one of 58 trading strategies

Daily Market Commentary: Swing Trade Narrow Range

Image
In the end it was a very tight intraday range which finished the day, providing swing trade opportunities off Tuesday's high/lows for both the S&P and Nasdaq. ($SPX) via StockCharts.com ($COMPQ) via StockCharts.com Only the semiconductor index finished with a loss, continuing its move off channel resistance. ($SOX) via StockCharts.com No reason this rally can't close higher for yet another day. The market is hot - but hot can take time to cool. Daily Market Commentary: Nothing Changes

Image
After Friday's modest push higher, Mondays' gains were barely audible. The S&P closed with a small doji - a possible shooting star - but nothing too convincing. ($SPX) via StockCharts.com The Nasdaq closed with a bearish cloud cover on higher volume distribution. Support at 2,579 carries greater weight than today's suggestive bearish turn. ($COMPQ) via StockCharts.com The semiconductor index is holding to channel resistance and is looking towards the 20-day MA and/or lower channel support. ($SOX) via StockCharts.com As for tomorrow, look for more of the same with bulls keeping control (with the possible exception of the semiconductor index). Weekly Review of Stockcharts.com charts: Melt Up

Image
Little change on last week with rallies pushing ever higher. EWT Followers are looking at clear fifth waves which likely means a scrappy first half of 2011 to follow. Anthony Caldaro of Elliot Wave Lives On has a next target of 1,261 for the S&P. The Dow is lagging a little, but should follow suit; note cup-and-handle on 60-minute chart. Richard Lehman of Trend Channel Magic has firm green rising channels in place, even if he himself thinks Tech and Small Caps are looking risky. 12/12 -- Gold and oil are correcting. India and China have both had 10% corrections. Meanwhile, US stocks march on. We may finish out the year on firm footing as institutions load up for year-end window dressing, but the charts are getting very toppy again -- particularly techs and small caps. Ben's buying binge may keep things from dropping too dramatically, but either we flatten out and get more choppy soon or we will end up in bubble territory again (if not there already). 12/8 -- Gol

Daily Market Commentary: Inches higher

Image
Yesterday's recovery was able to push a little higher and came close to negating Tuesday's bearish candlesticks. The S&P is a couple of points away from 'Shooting Star' highs. ($SPX) via StockCharts.com The Nasdaq is challenging the black candlestick highs (but with a 'Shooting Star' of its own!). Volume climbed to register an accumulation day. ($COMPQ) via StockCharts.com While the Russell 2000 posted its third doji in a row; indecision continues. ($RUT) via StockCharts.com Any gains tomorrow and Tuesday's bearish candlesticks will be put to bed once and for all. The past week has seen some very narrow trading which builds tension for a subsequent large reaction. If Tuesday's highs break look for a decent upside reaction as shorts are forced to cover. Long stops / shorts will wait for a break of yesterday's lows. Follow Me on Twitter Build a Trading Strategy Business in Zignals Subscribe to one of 58 trading strategies co

Daily Market Commentary: Bears Fail To Prevail

Image
Yesterday's black candlesticks and 'shooting stars' had set up an easy slam dunk for bears, but in the end they couldn't take advantage. Early losses were quickly recovered and by the end of the day some markets had managed to close higher. Tomorrow could see a drive to Tuesday's highs and beyond, negating the bearish implications of 'Shooting Stars' and black candlesticks. The S&P was one such market to close higher - although it did not get close to challenging Tuesday's highs. ($SPX) via StockCharts.com The Nasdaq held its 2,579 breakout ($COMPQ) via StockCharts.com But the Russell 2000 was little changed ($RUT) via StockCharts.com For tomorrow, look for further upside from the S&P and Nasdaq. But for the Russell 2000 it might be better to swing trade Wednesday's doji. Daily Market Commentary: Black Candlesticks & Shooting Stars

Image
Bulls couldn't hold all of their intraday gains and were rebuffed by the close. The S&P suffered a bearish 'shooting star' on higher volume right on the early November reaction high. Bears will look to short a break of Tuesday's lows. ($SPX) via StockCharts.com The Nasdaq finished with a black candlestick. Black candlesticks are frequently associated with market tops, but a break of Tuesday's highs would negate the bearishness typically associated with this candlestick. ($COMPQ) via StockCharts.com The Russell 2000 also finished with a bearish shooting star which is clearly in a position to mark a top - watch for a gap down off the open. Lending weight to this scenario is the overbought condition of technicals. ($RUT) via StockCharts.com Finally, the semiconductor index reversed off channel resistance. ($SOX) via StockCharts.com For Wednesday, watch for a gap down which would offer a respectable shorting opportunity with a stop on a break of Tue
