Weekly Market Commentary: Heavy Selling

Image
Selling volume picked up as bull trendline breaks were confirmed. With the second week of losses under the belt it's now time to look at Fibonacci retracements as potential support levels. In the Nasdaq this means the first support level kicks in at 1,932 with the low end at 1,683. Based on the March-Jan rally, most likely support is at 1,759. For the S&P, fib retracements start at 966 and run down to 852 with a thick support zone in the 900-950 range. The Russell 2000 lost its resistance breakout, leaving behind a sizable bull trap. Touch points of the bearish divergence of Percentage of Nasdaq stocks above the 50-day MA proved to be good profit taking areas for those who took advantage. The Percentage of S&P Stocks above the 50-day MA is getting to the point where soon it will be oversold and ready to buy - but not yet... However, given all the bearishness - none of the indices have triggered 'strong sell' signals. Stochastics are fast weakening so if it's n

Stock Market Commentary: Bulls Have Rug Pulled.

Image
They held on for a few days but it was worrying bulls were unable to mount a challenge to the 50-day MAs, let alone the 20-day MAs. Volume climbed to register a confirmed distribution day. The possibility now is for some form of measured move down; for example, the Nasdaq could drop to 2,100 before bouncing. Relative strength has shifted sharply to large caps and away from speculative tech / small cap indices. As an example, small caps had a bearish engulfing pattern on yesterday's bullish engulfing, although impressive, momentum is oversold so the pattern's significance is less. However, the losses on the day were enough to turn supporting technicals net bearish. The Nasdaq 100 broke from channel support As semiconductors took it on the chin. But even in a 'leadership' role, large caps have their own troubles; note break of channel support in the S&P Just to add insult to injury, technicals for the Percentage of Nasdaq Stocks above the 50-day MA, Nasdaq Summation I

Stock Market Commentary: Bulls Dig In

Image
The late morning selling had the potential to trigger a run of stops but buyers returned to push markets back towards their 50-day MAs. Volume rose to register accumulation days for many of the markets - keeping markets on track for a more sustained rally. The Nasdaq 100 did the some good legwork by working itself above former 1,814 support and a bull cross in on-balance-volume. The Russell 2000 did its best with a large bullish engulfing pattern at oversold short term conditions and a bull cross of the 50-day MA. There should be enough for a follow through to the 20-day MA. The S&P has the best defined risk:reward with the bullish hammer at channel support on oversold stochastics enabling a 'buy' with a stop on a loss of Wednesday's lows. Look for bulls to get a little more out of this Thursday, but as 20-day MAs fall into range bears will eventually gain the upper hand and likely send the indices towards their 200-day MAs. Stock Market Commentary: Bullish Percents add to Bearish Pressure

Image
There was confirmation in the bear cross of the 5-day EMA in the Nasdaq Bullish Percents with a MACD trigger 'sell' and a rebound off declining resistance. Bullish Percents are still in overbought territory with bearish pressure likely to push this lower before a firm buying opportunity presents itself in the Nasdaq. This adds to the previous 'sell' triggers in the Summation Index And Percentage of Stocks above the 50-day MA. The Nasdaq itself had another mixed day with higher volume churning. It still could go either way but the failure for even an intraday cross of the 50-day MA is a little worrying. The Russell 2000 suffered a more concerted sell off as it closed below its 50-day MA The S&P still looks to provide the best rebound buying opportunity as channel support held. Even with the selling pressure the environment probable still favors buyers in the short term. Dr. Declan Fallon, Senior Market Technician for Zignals.com , offers a range of stock trading stra
